Taylor Swift Missing from Grammy List

At the beginning of 2010, Taylor Swift walked away with four Grammy Awards, including the Album of the Year honor for Fearless. But when the 53rd annual Grammy nominees were unveiled Wednesday night, Taylor’s name was nowhere to be found among the 109 categories. Stunning? A little, though not entirely. For starters, the eligibility period runs Sept. 1, 2009 through Sept. 30, 2010. Her new album, Speak Now, didn’t come out until late October, so that project is ineligible. “Fearless” and “Mine” were both released as singles, and she had a couple of titles on the Valentine’s Day soundtrack, and any of those could have potentially found a space on the Grammy list. Through songs such as “Mine,” “White Horse” and “Fifteen,” Taylor Swift has shown a real appreciation for great drama and complex character development. This week, she’s experienced drama firsthand. And she and co-writer Liz Rose shared Country Song of the Year for “You Belong With Me,” recognized as the most-played country title over a full year, according to the performing rights organization. Just a day earlier, Taylor sang at a funeral for a friend. Read More

Taylor Swift Sells A Million!

The final numbers are in, and Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now” album enjoyed sales of historic proportions during its first week of release. The album sold 1.047 million copies, Billboard reported. It’s an impressive number at any time, but particularly under the circumstances. Album sales are plummeting, and there were doubts in the music industry that anyone would ever sell a million in a week again. It’s only the 16th time it’s happened in history, and the last time was when rapper Lil Wayne hit seven digits with the first-week sales of Tha Carter III. In fact, no one has moved as many albums as Taylor in a debut week since 50 Cent’s The Massacre hit 1.141 million in 2005. And the only country album that ever sold more than “Speak Now” was Garth Brooks’ “Double Live,” which saw 1.085 million units sold in 1998, when Taylor was eight years old. Read More
